Practical ritual, written for beginners

The guides in this section describe home practices as they are actually done: which candle colour is chosen for which intention and why, how a candle is "dressed" with oil and herbs, what practitioners do at each phase of the moon, how a room or a new home is cleansed with salt, smoke or sound, and what the behaviour of a flame or the shape of leftover wax has traditionally been taken to mean. Every guide gives the materials, the steps and the timing, and says which tradition the practice comes from.

Mundane first, then magical

When a candle flickers, pops or goes out, the guides look at the ordinary causes — draughts, a long wick, a cheap wax — before the symbolic ones, because that is the honest order. The same principle runs through the cleansing and protection guides: a practice is described as something people do to mark an intention and settle the mind, not as a mechanism that forces an outcome.

Safety and timing

Fire safety instructions are part of every candle guide, not a footnote. For timing, the moon phase calculator shows the current phase and the dates of the next new and full moons, and each moon-ritual guide explains what that phase is traditionally used for.
